Language enters the pattern. A perfect checkerboard of black and white tiles, each one filled with repeated symbols — interlocking forms that resemble stylized monograms or heraldic marks, rendered alternately in white on black and black on white. Scattered throughout are tiny decorative marks, almost like footnotes or signatures, creating a sense that each symbol carries notation, commentary, a burden of meaning. The composition reads simultaneously as formal textile, as code, as a page of text, as a field of repeated identity markers. The strict alternation creates optical vibration — the black and white squares seem to shimmer, to advance and recede, while the symbols themselves remain perfectly legible, perfectly repeated, perfectly contained within their geometric cells.

Statement

Checkeredism #107 introduces language, symbol, and communication into the series' inquiry. Where #106 reduced the self to a single enigmatic mark, #107 multiplies that mark, makes it repeatable, codifiable, capable of being transcribed and transmitted. The tiny decorative flourishes suggest annotation — that each choice carries not just consequence but meaning, interpretation, the need to be explained or justified.

The work asks: What happens when consequence becomes communicable? When the self is not just a pattern but a repeatable symbol? The perfect alternation suggests that choices, once coded into language or symbol, lose some of their particularity — they become interchangeable, transferable, part of a larger system of meaning. Yet the persistence of those tiny marks — those signatures, those notes — suggests that even as we are absorbed into pattern, we insist on being read, on being marked as distinct.
