A radical structural break rendered in three colours: orange, black, and white arranged in a tight checkerboard, each cell holding one of four repeated elements — an orange rectangle filled with delicate hand-drawn botanical line work, a black void with a white square at its centre, a white cell containing similar organic line drawings, and a black cell containing an orange rectangle with more botanical forms. The orange glows like captured light, like the last warmth of day before darkness; the black reads as absence, as void, as the moment when the sun is utterly consumed. Between them, the white cells provide neither comfort nor transition — they are blank, neutral, almost administrative in their clarity.

Statement

Checkeredism #102 introduces a cosmological dimension to the series’ inquiry into consequence. The orange speaks of golden hour — that liminal moment of warmth, visibility, clarity, the last light before shadow. The black is total eclipse, the sun consumed, the void made visible. Together they form a paradox: the brightest and darkest moments, locked in perpetual alternation.

Sosa embeds delicate botanical illustrations within the orange cells — organic growth, life-forms rendered with precision and care — suggesting that choice and consequence are not abstract but rooted in living systems, in growth, in the small gestures of becoming. The black cells hold only emptiness and the faint promise of a white centre, as though even in the moment of total eclipse, some distant light persists.

The work asks: Are we the choices we make during golden hour, when we can see clearly? Or are we equally the choices made in darkness, made blind, made without the mercy of visibility? We are the choices we make — all of them, the illuminated and the eclipsed alike.
