A pivotal shift: for the first time in the series, the grid contains something other than itself. At the work’s centre, rendered in the same pixel-checker texture that builds every square, a face emerges — barely legible, almost abstract, but undeniably human. It gazes outward from a field of cyan and pale green, ringed by concentric layers of white squares that seem to hold it in place like a target or a frame within the frame. Around this intimate core, the palette radiates outward through deeper greens and yellows to the work’s edges, creating the effect of a life looked at from within — the self as the grid’s still centre, with every choice radiating outward from that one fixed point.

Statement

Checkeredism #092 introduces the human figure into a series that has, until now, remained abstract. Sosa embeds a face at the compositional heart — not rendered photographically, but built from the same pixel-checker that constructs the board itself, as though to insist that the self is not separate from the pattern but made of it. The concentric rings of white squares that surround this centre read as both protection and exposure: the individual held at the grid’s heart, simultaneously its maker and its subject.

The work marks a crucial moment in the series’ evolution: the recognition that the chessboard, the pattern, the accumulation of choices, is not abstract at all. It is always, irrevocably, a portrait of someone.

The buyer receives:
